THIRD REICH EASTERN FRONT MEDAL CITATION AND CONDOLENCE LETTER.

This is a most interesting combination of the citation for an Eastern Front/Russian Front medal awarded posthumously along with the letter to the soldiers next of kin. These two would have accompanied the medal when it was sent. Awarded to a Johann Pretl in August 1942. The accompanying letter was sent to a Frau Anna Winter in Vienna in August 1943. It states he was killed on 31st December 1942. The typist made a mistake and typed 1941 and it was period corrected in pencil to 1942!! The letter in on official Third Reich printed paper and actually says 'in proud remembrance' of Private Johann Pretl who was a member of a cyclist unit. Interestingly, the last sentence says that the medal is a 'memorial piece' and members of the family are not allowed to wear it! Quite a unique pairing. Add a Russian Front medal in a packet and you would have a nice little group.
