Victorian Naval Rates summer cap HMS Crescent.

Victorian Naval Rates summer cap HMS Crescent.

Victorian Naval Rates lightweight summer cap from the ship HMS Crescent. HMS Crescent was a first class cruiser of the Edgar class. Crescent, and her sister ship Royal Arthur, were built to a slightly modified design and are sometimes considered a separate class. She was built at Portsmouth and launched on 30 March 1892. As at 11 January 1895 she was leaving Australia under Captain Arbuthnot.[1] She served in the First World War, and was sold on 22 September 1921 for breaking up in Germany. Cap in good, clean condition, some soiling to interior and some loss to one swallow tail.

 Commando Grouping.

Commando Grouping.

Medal/paperwork and fighting knife grouping to 5055894 L/Cpl.George.E.Pym N.Staffs and probably 6 Troop, 5 Commando. Grouping consists of medals 39-45, Burma Star, Defence and War medal with original box ( Birmingham address ) and slip, various photos showing groups probably in Burma and a large panorama shot showing men at Commando Basic Training Centre ( Achnacarry ) in 1944. Accompanied by Commando Service Certificate showing service between Jan 43 and Oct.45, SEAC souvenir newspaper and Asia Command Christmas greeting. Grouping also comes with a particularly good example of a 2nd Patt FS fighting knife marked ' B2 and arrow ' to cross guard. Knife looks to be little used with no sign of sharpening, contact rubbing to top of handle and very light speckling to blade from storage in scabbard. Scabbard in good, clean condition, with both tabs and elastic retainer which retains some degree of elasticity. Pym's service with 5 Commando is not confirmed but is suggested by the other items in the grouping and the note to photos indicating 6 Troop and Burma 1944. Would reward further research, scarce untouched Commando grouping

OSS Detachment 101 Burma Campaign Bar.

OSS Detachment 101 Burma Campaign Bar.

Originally designated U.S. Experimental Station, Detachment 101, OSS, and activated in September of 1942, the organization was formed to conduct intelligence and paramilitary operations in China with many of the operations taking place in Burma. The Campaign Bars—awarded to Kachins who had distinguished themselves in combat—were manufactured in reasonable numbers, allowing many of the American 101 personnel to acquire one, however, it remains a scarce item. This original example, marked 'sterling' to the reverse, is in excellent condition, pleasingly patinated overall with minor edge knocks and scratches.

WW1 34th Div MkI Steel Helmet.

WW1 34th Div MkI Steel Helmet.

Steel helmet Mk I or 'Brodie'. This particular example is marked to the front with the chequerboard device of the 34th Division, a device that was adopted after the Division's arrival in France in early 1916. This example is interesting for showing clear signs of having been refurbished by the AOC Salvage Supply Depot indicating that it was probably retrieved from the battlefield. The liner is a standard 'War Office Pattern Brodie's Patent' type that has a rip machine repaired and the crown cushion replaced and secured with a nut, bolt and washer. The chinstrap is a two piece replacement. The current paint finish shows clear signs of having been overpainted over a previous finish with the 34 Div sign to the front and possible signs of a similar device to the reverse that has been removed. The helmet is in good condition with approx 75% original paint finish remaining (34 Div. device 98% present) with a clean liner. The chinstrap is pliable but potentially fragile near chinstrap loop in one place. However, this is an excellent divisionally marked example with a history.
