Logbook, medal and ephemera grouping to 1457998 W/O.Arthur Howarth a pilot with 179 Sqn. Coastal Command. Howarth originally an employee of Bristol Aircraft, started flight training in Oct.1942 in Rhodesia being awarded his wings in March 1943. Passing through 6(P)AFU AND 6 OTU and converting to multi-engine types before joining 179 Sqn. on Wellingtons. Operating from Predannack, Chivenor and Benbecula Howarth acting as second pilot, undertook Box patrols and convoy escorts. December 1944 saw the squadron convert Warwick Vs where patrols over the S.W.Approaches continued. He ended his war with a crash landing and a series of Leigh Light sorties with submarines.
Grouping includes a bound logbook, boxed medals - 1939-45 and Atlantic Stars with War Medal, paybook, various passes, Link trainer traces, sortie records and a flat, embroidered pilot's wing. Also included various items of post War ephemera concerning the end of his service and his continued employment with Rolls Royce as part of the design team of the Orpheus engine in the Bristol Engineering Division ( invitation to the first flight of Concorde 002, the British built prototype ).
