1917 Horn-gripped, Presentation Fighting Knife.

1917 Horn-gripped, silver mounted presentation fighting knife inscribed to one side of the blade ' Erholingsaufenthalt 1917 ' and 'Aus Dankbarkeit - von Fam.Wnr.E.Hackenstras, Grasrath b/Solingen '. These knives were popular gifts for the man at the front and this one appears to have been given in appreciation of a leave from a family in Grafrath bei Solingen, a district of Solingen. The 15cm blade with false edge has gilt-filled inscriptions to both sides but has suffered from corrosion which has now been removed but has left staining and pitting but fortunately has largely left the inscriptions undamaged. Steel cross guard with shrunken felt buffer topped by a deer antler handle with silver mount. Knife is contained in a leather scabbard with a blackened steel shape which also shows some minor signs of corrosion, otherwise excellent condition. Attractive WW1 knife, priced to reflect it's defects.
