A WW1 Creagh-Osborne Compass,patent '1148/1915 manufactured by H Hughes & Son Ltd London. A prismatic and liquid dampened wrist mounted marching compass, this well engineered type found favour amongst flyers and very similar to Observer's wrist compass Pattern 261 BLACKER-Type used by balloonists.
Captain F. Creagh-Osborne (1867-1943) was an inventor and Superintendent of Compasses with the British Admiralty. He joined the Royal Navy in 1881 and went on to be a pioneer in the field of aerial navigation. He introduced numerous innovations in compass design, producing models for use on land and in aircraft. Many of his designs were put into production by H. Hughes & Son Ltd and the Sperry Gyroscope Company.
Good, used condition with wear to finish and minor abrasions to glass, missing wrist strap and in working order with a bubble to liquid filling. Unusual.
