Important WW1 DSO MiD Group - Lt.Col.P.N.Nissen - Nissen Hut inventor
An important WW1 medal group toLt.Col Peter Norman Nissen, DSO, MiD RE a Canadian-American-British mining engineer, inventor and army officer. He held a number of patents for his inventions and developed the Nissen hut prefabricated shelter during the First World War.
Born in the USA in 1871, Nissen became a mining engineer and following spells in Canada and South Africa came toBritain in 1913. He joined the British Army early in the War being commissioned into the Sherwood Foresters before transferring to the RE in 1915. He was responsible for the design and development of the ubiquitous hut which bore his name and ran to 100,000 units by the end of WW1. He was awarded the DSO for his efforts in 1917, MiD in 1919 and Order of St. Sava, third class, by Serbia. He became a naturalised British citizen in 1921.
Medals are mounted for wear with original ribbon. 1914/15 Star shows Nissen with the rank of captain, Lt. Col to War and Victory medals. Medals in good to fine condition, patinated overall with light contact wear. Accompanied by a contemporary press photo and two IWM photos showing Nissen and huts under construction. Comes with an extensive file of research.
