WW2 Grenade, Hand, No.80, Smoke Mk I.

Scarce example of a British WW2 Grenade, Hand, No.80, Smoke Mk I. or No.80, Smoke, WP. This grenade was the genesis of the current British Army ' L ' Series smoke grenades and was introduced in 1943 as a smoke grenade but was just as often used in the AP or incendiary role. Equipped with a 1944 dated ' striker mechanism No.2 MkI ' this wartime example can be differentiated with post War examples by the colour and lack of a red filling stripe. This example has been from a damp environment leaving a flaked paint finish with approx. 65% of the original paint, some corrosion to lever. The grenade has been made safe by the drilling of holes to the top of the grenade leaving none of the original white phosphorus filling remaining. Scarce.
