WW1 RFC Casualty letter grouping No.3 Squadron.

Four letters and their accompanying envelopes sent by Capt Robert John Lillywhte of No.3 Squadron. Lillywhite, nephew of the famous cricketer and founder of the ' Lillywhite ' store in London, gained his Aero Club certificate in 1914 and was involved in Britain's first parachute jump at Hendon in the same year. Joining No.3 Squadron he served in Egypt as a Sgt pilot, returning in 1915 to accept a commission and then to France. With the future ace J.B.McCudden as his observer he shot down ' my first Hun ' in December 1915. He was eventually killed in a flying accident in November 1916 and was buried at Westhampnett.
The letters are all addressed to a Miss M Spendlove of Hendon ' My dear pickle May ' to whom he writes about the shooting down of ' my first Hun ' ' photos of the Hun trenches ' and how the flying ' was much better than in Eygpt '. Signing himself as ' Jack ' he also writes from the Meynell Hospital ( for officers ) where he was admitted ' with nerves and heart '. All letters in clean condition with easily legible handwriting with envelopes all of which have the notation ' R.J.Lillywhite ' to top corner. Accompanied by another contemporary letter and various research.
