WW1 Trio, 1914/15 Star, War and Victory Medal grouping to 284049 S.P.O..R.N. D.Lonsdale. Petty Officer Stoker David Lonsdale was lost when HMS Hawke was sunk on 15/10/1914. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Chatham Memorial.
HMS Hawke, was torpedoed by U9 which had been attacking Hawke's sister ship HMS Theseus as the two cruisers patrolled the North Sea. Hawke exploded after a magazine explosion and sank within 5 minutes with only 4 officers and 70 of her 594 compliment being saved. Lonsdale,originally from Sheffield was one of the casualties.
The group consists of the 191/15 Star Trio, with their boxes and Admiralty envelope of transition, Memorial plaque, envelope and cover, Memorial scroll, certificate of condolence from the City of Sheffield, unsigned letter of condolence from Winston Churchill and a mounted memorial photograph of Lonsdale. Also accompanied by a poignant hand written verse given to Lonsdale's widow. Medals in excellent condition, toned overall, paperwork has usual marking, folds, and tears associated with items of this age. Sellotape repair to the Admiralty condolence letter. Accompanied by a small amount of research - warrants a more thorough effort.
