Japanese Good Luck Bag.
Typically carried by many Japanese combatants of all services this bag contains a number of good luck offerings collected from temples and shrines. Individually wrapped wooden and silk shapes featuring various hanko and pictograms were sent to loved ones as symbols of good luck and often, as in this case were carried together in a bag. This example is made from silk and cotton and features a rising sun to one side with an inked name and a lotus blossom to the other. All of the ensemble has clearly been carried and is a little worn and has clearly been subject to moisture at some time. A poignant piece of personal kit.
