87cm approx, good quality, silver - topped cane. 1916, London hallmarked, heavy silver top engraved with the initials H.G. Coldstream Guards '. This cane was once the property of the poet Harry Graham who joined the Guards in 1893 serving as aide-de-camp to the Governor-General of Canada before becoming a full time writer in 1906. He rejoined the Coldstream Guards in 1914 serving in France with the 40th and 5th Divisions dying of cancer in 1936. A prolific writer he was compared to Edward Lear and cited as an influence on writers including P.G.Wodehouse. A good, high quality momento of one of the lesser known soldier writer/poets.
