WW1 Brunner Mond explosive factory national service badge.

Gilt and enamel lapel badge for Brunner Mond & Co, a chemical company involved in the manufacture of explosives. Their Silvertown factory exploded in Silvertown in West Ham, Essex on Friday, 19 January 1917 at 6.52 pm. The blast occurred at their munitions plantthat was manufacturing explosives for Britain's World War I military effort. Approximately 50 tons of trinitrotoluene (TNT) exploded, killing 73 people and injuring 400 more, as well as causing substantial damage in the local area.
Badge in excellent, bright condition, manufacturer marked ' Fattorini, Bolton ' and numbered to reverse, minor marks to obverse. Scarce.
