WW2 Japanese ' Going to War / Good Luck ' belt.
Silk belt with ties ( approx.110cms ) with exhortations to confer good luck on the wearer going to war. It appeared that this item was originally a double sided banner painted to one side with various characters and temple chop marks. At some point the original owner has sowed, relatively crudely, a set of cotton ties to each end and a cotton envelope or pouch to the centre. This bag contains a number of good luck offerings collected from temples and shrines. Individually wrapped wooden and silk shapes featuring various hanko and pictograms were sent to loved ones as symbols of good luck and often, as in this case were carried together in a bag. This example is crease and stained through wear with a possible blood stain to the centre.
