A GREAT EXAMPLE OF A WW1 M18 STEEL HELMET WITH PERIOD CAMOUFLAGE PAINT.
These helmets have become somewhat of a collecting ‘art form’. There are some wonderful variations and colours, depending upon what was the type of local countryside, area, foliage, conditions etc. Some are quite bright and colourful, others, like this one, are much more muted with darker colours etc.
This M18 has virtually all of the original liner. Steel interior band with 3 leather pads and horsehair stuffing. 2 of the pads still have their original white tape drawstrings. The pads are somewhat fragile (they are about 107 years old!) but are still attached to the liner band. There is no chinstrap but the lugs are there. The camouflage is painted over the original dark green base colour, and of course was done by hand, with locally available paints. The colours range from black, dark tan/brown to green and are painted in a ‘swirl’ pattern.
A totally original and now quite rare helmet.
