Embroidered example of the badge worn by the 77th Indian Brigade and later the 3rd Indian Division - The Chindits. Formed by Orde Wingate in 1942 and fought extensively throughout Burma, often behind Japanese lines.
The name Chindits is a corruption of the word ' Chinthe ' which is the lion-headed pagoda guardian seen throughout Burma and represented by the patch.
This wire thread example has cotton highlights embroidered onto a coarse weave blue material with black backing. Clear evidence of having been removed from a uniform with some snagging and rubbing to surface.
