WW1 Women's National Land Service Corps Brassard.
In response to chronic manpower shortages that became increasingly apparent as WW1 progressed The Women's National Land Services Corps - later developed into the Women's Land Army - was created in order to bring urban women, usually educated and middle class, into the countryside in the 'lighter' rural roles. As an identifier the women wore a canvas armband or brassard overprinted with the name W.N.L.S.C and in this case with the word ' Flax ' as a signifier of their involvement with a particular crop or speciality. In 1918 the flax harvest was saved by some 3000 volunteers sent out by the Corps. Scarce armband in excellent, used condition.
